Pain-Relief Medicine When Appropriate

Pain-relief medicines can help reduce period cramps, lower-back pain, and other menstrual discomfort. They work best when taken correctly and only when they are safe for the person.

1. NSAIDs such as ibuprofen or naproxen
These medicines reduce substances called prostaglandins, which contribute to uterine contractions and menstrual cramps. They are often particularly effective when started when cramps begin, or just before the expected period if a healthcare professional has advised this.

2. Follow the recommended dose
Always follow the dosage instructions on the medicine package or advice from a doctor/pharmacist. Do not take more than the recommended amount, and don't combine different NSAIDs (for example, ibuprofen and naproxen) unless a healthcare professional tells you to.

3. Take with food if appropriate
NSAIDs can irritate the stomach. Taking them with food or milk may reduce stomach discomfort. Stop and seek medical advice if significant stomach pain, vomiting blood, or black stools occur.

4. Paracetamol (acetaminophen)
Paracetamol can also help with mild-to-moderate period pain and may be an option for people who cannot take NSAIDs. Follow the package dose carefully and avoid taking multiple medicines containing paracetamol at the same time.

5. Check before using medicine
Ask a doctor or pharmacist before using NSAIDs if you have a history of stomach ulcers, kidney problems, certain heart conditions, asthma triggered by painkillers, take blood thinners, or might be pregnant.

6. Don't rely on painkillers for unusually severe pain
If period pain is severe, getting worse over time, causes fainting or vomiting, or regularly interferes with school or daily activities, medical evaluation is important. Painkillers may temporarily reduce symptoms while an underlying condition still needs treatment.

Important: For teenagers, medication should be used according to the product's age/weight instructions or advice from a healthcare professional.
