Using a heating pad is one of the simplest ways to help relieve menstrual cramps. Warmth can relax the muscles in the lower abdomen and may reduce the intensity of cramping and discomfort.
How to use a heating pad:
- Choose a comfortable temperature – Use warm heat rather than very hot heat. The pad should feel soothing, not painful or burning.
- Place it on the lower abdomen – Put the heating pad over the area where you feel cramps, usually below the belly button.
- Use it for 15–20 minutes – You can repeat this several times during the day when needed, allowing your skin to cool between sessions.
- Protect your skin – If the pad is very warm, place a thin towel or cloth between the heating pad and your skin.
- Try your lower back too – If your period pain spreads to your back, gentle heat on the lower back may also provide relief.
- Relax while using it – Lie or sit comfortably, take slow breaths, and allow your abdominal muscles to relax.
Safety tip: Never fall asleep with a heating pad switched on, and avoid placing very hot heat directly against your skin for a long time because it can cause burns.
If period pain is unusually severe, keeps getting worse, or interferes with normal daily activities, it's a good idea to speak with a healthcare professional.
