Rest, But Don’t Stay Completely Still

When you have pain from the shoulder to the neck that may spread toward the head, resting can help your muscles recover. However, staying in bed or keeping your neck completely still for a long time can sometimes make the muscles stiffer and weaker, which may increase discomfort.

  • Take short rest periods: If your neck and shoulder are painful, stop activities that make the pain worse and rest for a while. You don't need to remain in bed all day.
  • Keep moving gently: Every 30–60 minutes, change your position. Slowly move your shoulders, walk around the room, or gently turn your head within a comfortable range.
  • Avoid sudden movements: Don't quickly twist, jerk, or force your neck backward or sideways. Avoid heavy lifting until the pain improves.
  • Reduce prolonged phone use: Looking down at a phone for a long time can strain the neck. Hold the phone closer to eye level and take frequent breaks.
  • Maintain a comfortable sleeping position: Use a pillow that supports your neck without pushing your head too far forward. Try to avoid sleeping in a position that increases your pain.
  • Gradually return to normal activities: As the pain improves, slowly resume your usual activities rather than suddenly doing strenuous exercise or heavy work.

Important: Gentle movement should not cause sharp, severe, or worsening pain. If movement makes your headache or neck pain significantly worse, stop and seek medical advice, especially if you develop weakness, numbness, dizziness, vision changes, fever, or a sudden severe headache.
