Avoid Rubbing Your Eyes

Rubbing your eyes may feel comforting when they are itchy, red, dry, or irritated. However, rubbing can make the irritation worse and may even damage the delicate surface of your eyes. If you want to keep your eyes healthy and reduce discomfort, it is important to avoid rubbing them and follow gentle eye-care habits.

1. Why Should You Avoid Rubbing Your Eyes?

The skin around your eyes is delicate, and the surface of your eyes is sensitive. Rubbing them forcefully can increase redness, swelling, and irritation. It may also worsen allergy symptoms or scratch the cornea, the clear front surface of the eye.

Frequent rubbing over time may also contribute to changes in the shape of the cornea, particularly in people who are susceptible to certain eye conditions.

 2. What Should You Do Instead of Rubbing?

Use a clean, cool compress. Soak a clean, soft cloth in cool water, squeeze out the excess water, close your eyes, and gently place the cloth over them for 5–10 minutes. Do not press on your eyes. This may help soothe mild itching, swelling, and irritation.

3. Keep Your Hands Clean

Our hands can carry dust, dirt, and germs. Touching or rubbing your eyes with unwashed hands may introduce irritants or microorganisms. Wash your hands regularly, especially before applying eye drops or handling contact lenses.

4. Take Breaks From Screens

Using a mobile phone or computer for long periods can contribute to dry, tired eyes. Follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. Remember to blink regularly to help keep your eyes moist.

 5. Avoid Things That Irritate Your Eyes

Stay away from smoke, dust, strong fragrances, and other substances that trigger irritation. If you experience dryness, preservative-free artificial tears may help. Avoid putting homemade remedies, rose water, lemon juice, or other unapproved substances into your eyes.

6. When Should You Seek Medical Help?

If your eye redness or pain continues, consult an eye-care professional. Seek urgent medical attention if you experience severe pain, blurred vision, sensitivity to light, an eye injury, or a very red eye while wearing contact lenses. Do not rely on home remedies when these warning signs occur.

Remember: Healthy eyes need gentle care. Avoid rubbing, use a cool compress for mild irritation, and seek medical advice when symptoms are severe or persistent.
