Use Acne-Fighting Ingredients

Using the right acne-fighting ingredients can help control pimples during rainy weather, when humidity, sweat, and excess oil may contribute to clogged pores. The key is to choose one or two suitable ingredients and use them consistently, rather than applying many strong products at once.

1. Salicylic Acid

Salicylic acid is a useful ingredient for clogged pores, blackheads, whiteheads, and mild pimples. It helps remove excess oil and dead skin cells from inside pores.

  • Start with a low-strength product, such as 0.5–2% salicylic acid.
  • Use it once a day or every other day initially.
  • If your skin becomes dry, irritated, or excessively peeling, reduce the frequency.

2. Benzoyl Peroxide

Benzoyl peroxide can be particularly helpful for inflamed pimples. It works against acne-causing bacteria and can reduce inflammation.

  • A 2.5% formulation is often a good starting point.
  • Apply a thin layer to acne-prone areas as directed on the product.
  • It can cause dryness or irritation, so introduce it gradually.
  • It can bleach towels, pillowcases, and clothing.

3. Niacinamide

Niacinamide can help support the skin barrier and may reduce excess oil and redness. It is generally gentler than many acne treatments.

A moisturizer or serum containing around 2–5% niacinamide can be a reasonable choice for many people. If you have sensitive skin, start with a lower concentration.

4. Adapalene

Adapalene is a topical retinoid that helps prevent clogged pores and is useful for recurring acne. It is usually applied in a thin layer at night rather than only on individual pimples.

Because it can initially cause dryness or irritation, introduce it gradually and use moisturizer. Do not use topical retinoids such as adapalene during pregnancy unless your healthcare professional specifically advises you to.

5. Moisturize After Acne Treatment

Acne treatments can dry or irritate your skin. Use a lightweight, fragrance-free, non-comedogenic moisturizer to help maintain the skin barrier. Moisturizing does not mean your acne treatment has failed—it can actually make a routine easier to tolerate.

6. Don't Mix Too Many Strong Ingredients

Avoid starting salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, and a retinoid all at the same time. Too many active ingredients can cause redness, burning, dryness, and peeling.

A simple routine is often better:

Morning: Gentle cleanser → moisturizer → non-comedogenic sunscreen
Night: Gentle cleanser → one acne treatment → moisturizer

During rainy weather, also wash your face after heavy sweating and avoid repeatedly scrubbing your skin.

If your acne is severe, painful, cystic, leaving scars, or not improving after several weeks of consistent care, a dermatologist can recommend a more appropriate treatment.
