Move to a Safe Place

If a girl is being harassed, threatened, emotionally abused, or physically harmed by her parents or family members, her first priority should be her safety. She does not have to remain in a dangerous situation simply because the person causing harm is a family member.

1. Leave the dangerous situation

If an argument becomes violent or someone threatens to hurt her, she should try to move away from the person and go somewhere safer. If possible, choose a place with other people around rather than an isolated location.

2. Go to someone you trust

She can go to a trusted relative, close friend, neighbor, teacher, counselor, or another responsible adult who can provide immediate support. She should clearly explain what is happening rather than hiding the seriousness of the situation.

3. Choose a safe public place

If she cannot safely stay with someone she knows, she can move temporarily to a safe public location such as a police station, hospital, or another place where responsible people are available to help.

4. Keep important things ready

If it is safe to do so, she can keep essential items accessible, such as identification documents, phone, charger, necessary medicines, some money, and important contact numbers. She should avoid making preparations in a way that could increase her risk if someone is monitoring her.

5. Protect her phone and communication

If family members monitor her phone, she should be careful about how she seeks help. When possible, she can contact a trusted person using a safe device or from a place where she cannot be overheard.

6. Do not confront the abuser if it increases danger

She does not need to argue, threaten, or physically fight with the person harming her. The goal is to get to safety, not to win the argument.

7. Get help as soon as possible

Moving to a safe place is only the first step. She should seek help from trusted people, appropriate authorities, counselors, or support organizations so that she does not have to face the situation alone.

Remember

Being a parent or family member does not make abuse acceptable. Every girl deserves to live in a safe environment where she is treated with dignity and respect. If she is in immediate danger, she should seek emergency assistance rather than waiting for the situation to improve.
