Use Heat or Cold Appropriately

Using heat or cold correctly can provide temporary relief from joint pain, stiffness, and swelling, especially during rainy or damp weather. Choosing the right method depends on what your joint is experiencing.

Use heat for stiffness: A warm towel, heating pad, or warm bath can relax tight muscles and help reduce joint stiffness. Apply gentle warmth for about 15–20 minutes at a time. Make sure the heat is comfortable rather than very hot to avoid burning the skin.

Use cold for swelling: If a joint becomes swollen, irritated, or painful after physical activity, a cold pack may help reduce swelling and numb discomfort. Wrap the cold pack in a thin towel and apply it for about 15–20 minutes. Never place ice directly on your skin.

Avoid excessive heat or cold: Longer or more intense treatment is not necessarily better. Give your skin time to return to its normal temperature between applications and check the skin regularly for redness, numbness, or irritation.

Move gently afterward: After using heat, gentle stretching or light movement may help loosen the joint. If you use cold for swelling, allow the area to warm normally before exercising.

If joint pain is severe, persistent, or accompanied by significant swelling, redness, warmth, fever, or difficulty moving the joint, consult a healthcare professional.
