The skin around your eyes is the thinnest and most delicate skin on your body. Too much exposure to the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays can increase melanin (skin pigment) production, making dark circles look darker over time. UV rays also break down collagen and elastin, which can cause the under-eye area to become thinner and more hollow, making shadows more noticeable. Protecting your skin from the sun is one of the best ways to prevent dark circles from getting worse.
1. Apply Sunscreen Every Day
Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher every morning, even on cloudy days. Choose a sunscreen that is gentle enough for the face and safe to use around the eye area. Apply it carefully, avoiding direct contact with your eyes, and reapply every two hours if you are outdoors for long periods.
2. Wear UV-Protective Sunglasses
Sunglasses that block 99–100% of UVA and UVB rays help protect the delicate skin around your eyes. They also reduce squinting, which can contribute to fine lines and wrinkles over time. Larger or wraparound sunglasses provide even better coverage.
3. Wear a Wide-Brimmed Hat
A hat with a brim of at least 3 inches (about 7.5 cm) helps shade your face and eyes from direct sunlight. This provides extra protection when spending time outdoors.
4. Avoid Peak Sun Hours
The sun's UV rays are strongest between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. If possible, stay in the shade or limit outdoor activities during these hours to reduce UV exposure.
5. Moisturize the Under-Eye Area
After sun protection, use a gentle moisturizer or eye cream to keep the skin hydrated. Well-moisturized skin looks healthier and may make dark circles appear less noticeable.
6. Be Consistent
Sun protection is most effective when practiced every day, not just during summer. Daily use of sunscreen, sunglasses, and protective clothing helps prevent further pigmentation and supports healthier-looking skin over time.
Tip: If your dark circles are caused mainly by genetics or aging, sun protection may not remove them completely, but it can prevent them from becoming darker and help maintain healthier skin around the eyes.
