Oil Your Hair in Moderation

 

Oiling your hair is a great way to nourish the scalp and reduce hair damage, especially during the rainy season. However, using too much oil or leaving it on for too long can attract dirt, trap sweat, and increase the risk of dandruff or fungal infections. The key is to oil your hair in moderation.

Choose a lightweight, natural oil such as coconut oil, almond oil, or argan oil. Coconut oil helps reduce protein loss and strengthens the hair shaft. Almond oil is rich in vitamin E, which nourishes dry and damaged hair. Argan oil contains antioxidants and essential fatty acids that improve hair softness and reduce frizz.

Warm a small amount of oil until it is slightly lukewarm. Using your fingertips, gently massage the oil into your scalp with circular motions for 5–10 minutes. This massage improves blood circulation, helps the oil spread evenly, and can promote healthier hair growth. Avoid scratching your scalp with your nails, as this may cause irritation.

After massaging, apply a small amount of oil to the lengths and ends of your hair to protect them from dryness and breakage. Leave the oil on for 30–60 minutes, then wash your hair with a mild shampoo. If your scalp is very oily, avoid leaving the oil on overnight.

For most people, oiling the hair once or twice a week is enough during the rainy season. Over-oiling does not make hair healthier and may clog hair follicles or make the scalp greasy.

If you have dandruff, itching, or a scalp infection, avoid heavy oiling until the condition improves, and consult a dermatologist if symptoms persist.

Using the right amount of oil at the right frequency can help keep your scalp healthy, reduce hair breakage, improve hair shine, and support stronger, healthier hair throughout the monsoon season.
