Keep Your Head Elevated

Keeping your head slightly elevated after crying can help reduce swelling around the eyes. When you lie completely flat, fluid can collect around the delicate tissues near the eyes, which may make puffiness more noticeable. Raising your head slightly can help fluid drain more naturally and reduce the swollen appearance.

If you are resting or sleeping, use one extra pillow to support your head and keep it a little higher than the rest of your body. The position does not need to be very high; a gentle elevation is usually enough. Sleeping with your head slightly raised may be especially helpful if you cry before bedtime, because swelling can sometimes look worse in the morning.

While sitting, try to keep your posture upright instead of bending your head downward for long periods. Looking down at a phone or lying face-down may increase pressure around the eyes and can make puffiness last longer.

Keeping your head elevated works best when combined with other gentle care methods such as using a cold compress, staying hydrated, avoiding rubbing your eyes, and allowing your eyes to rest. These small steps together can help your eyes feel more comfortable and reduce swelling more quickly.
