Applying a cold compress is one of the easiest and most effective ways to reduce shoulder pain, especially in the early stage of injury or strain. Cold therapy works by narrowing blood vessels, which helps decrease swelling, inflammation, and pain in the affected area.
When you feel sudden shoulder pain, stiffness, or swelling, start using a cold compress within the first 24–48 hours. This is the period when inflammation is highest, and cold treatment gives the best results.
How to apply it properly:
- Take an ice pack or wrap a few ice cubes in a clean cloth (never apply ice directly on the skin)
- Place it gently on the painful shoulder area
- Keep it there for 15–20 minutes at a time
- Repeat this 2–3 times a day with a gap of at least 1–2 hours
Important precautions:
- Do not use ice for too long, as it may cause skin irritation or numbness
- Always use a cloth or towel to protect your skin
- Avoid cold compress if you already feel stiffness without swelling (in that case, heat may be better)
Cold compress is especially helpful if your shoulder pain is due to:
- Sudden injury
- Muscle strain
- Swelling or inflammation
By using this method correctly, you can quickly reduce pain and prevent the condition from getting worse.
