Addiction-Trajectory Matters More Than Just “Hours Used”

In today’s digital era, the concern is no longer limited to how many hours a child spends on a mobile device — rather, it’s about how deeply they are psychologically attached to it. This pattern, known as addiction-trajectory, refers to the gradual development of compulsive and emotionally driven screen use that often mimics the pattern of substance addiction.

Children who fall into a high addiction-trajectory are those who experience craving, irritability when separated from their device, and an inability to stop scrolling or playing even when they want to. Unlike casual users, these children begin to rely on their devices to manage emotions such as boredom, sadness, or loneliness. Over time, the behavior becomes habitual and deeply wired into their daily routines.

Research from Weill Cornell Medicine (2025) found that around one in three teenagers are on a “high addictive use” path for social media and mobile devices. These patterns are strongly linked to mental health concerns, including anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts. Importantly, the risk is not determined merely by the quantity of screen time, but by the quality of interaction — how emotionally charged and compulsive that usage is.

This distinction is vital for parents and educators. A child spending 3–4 hours daily on educational apps or creative platforms may not face the same consequences as another who compulsively checks social media or mobile games for validation and dopamine hits.

Understanding and identifying this trajectory early can help break the cycle of overdependence. Encouraging digital detoxes, offline hobbies, and mindful usage are powerful ways to steer children toward healthy digital habits.

Key signs of addiction-trajectory:

  • Emotional distress when phone is taken away
  • Constant checking of notifications
  • Losing track of time online
  • Decline in school performance or social interaction
  • Replacing outdoor play or hobbies with screen time

Focus Shift: From counting hours → to observing behavioural patterns and emotional responses.
