First Aid Steps to Stop Bleeding from a Cut
-
Wash your hands first
- Before touching the wound, wash your hands with soap and water (if possible) to avoid infection.
-
Apply gentle pressure
- Use a clean cloth, sterile gauze, or even a clean handkerchief to press firmly on the cut.
- Keep pressure for 5–10 minutes without lifting to allow clotting.
-
Elevate the injured area
- If possible, raise the bleeding part above heart level (like lifting your hand up) to slow the blood flow.
-
Clean the wound once bleeding slows
- After bleeding stops or slows, gently rinse with clean water.
- Remove dirt but don’t scrub harshly.
-
Apply an antiseptic
- Use an antiseptic solution (Dettol, Betadine, or Savlon) to disinfect.
-
Bandage it
- Cover with a sterile bandage or plaster to protect from infection.
-
Stay still and calm
- Movement can increase blood flow and prolong bleeding.
For Faster Clotting (Home Remedies)
- Turmeric paste (haldi): Apply directly on minor cuts—it has antiseptic and clotting properties.
- Ice: Apply near the area to constrict blood vessels and slow bleeding.
- Alum (phitkari): A traditional agent to stop minor bleeding.
When to Seek Medical Help Immediately
- Bleeding does not stop after 10–15 minutes of firm pressure.
- Cut is deep, very large, or shows exposed tissue.
- There is spurting blood (may be arterial).
- Signs of infection later (redness, swelling, pus, fever).
- The person feels dizzy, faint, or weak due to blood loss.
